Training Video, David Steans, 2021

Flash fiction for Illiterati

This is the last seminar before you all start your training. As stated in your packs — the instructor lifted a ring binder to their chest and tapped it — the probationary period lasts four months in total, including two weeks of seminars, which finish today. Keith opened up his pack. The information continued inside: the overall probationary period... pending availability of external suppliers... delivered by experts in the field... Pay attention! Keith was paying attention. He looked back up at the instructor.

The video reveals what can happen when employees aren't properly trained. There can be serious consequences. You may find the video shocking. Good! Keith tried not to smirk. It wasn't that he didn't take it seriously. He knew what could happen. But he'd seen films like this before.

The video started. A man at work, performing a procedure familiar from last week's seminars. The man on the video wasn't doing it properly; he'd missed a crucial step. It was easy enough to guess what was going to happen next. The man had his back to the camera, but just before he was maimed he turned around far enough for the camera to capture his face. The man on the video looked like Keith, in fact was Keith.

More scenes followed. Keith watched as he bungled procedure after procedure, each to grievous effect. The instructor droned on. If only they had been properly trained. If only they had been paying attention. Keith thought he had been paying attention. He knew how to perform each procedure safely. He wouldn't make the same mistakes as onscreen Keith. But, after watching the tenth or so mangling, he realised. He hadn't been paying attention. And he was now expected to perform a very different role to the one he had applied for.
